What data we process

- Data about ancestors sent with the "Report an ancestor" form: surname and, optionally, years and places of birth, residence and death of a person who died at least 50 years ago.
- Your email address, only if you choose to enter it in the form.
- IP address: when you submit the form it is used only in encrypted form (hash) and for no more than 24 hours, to prevent mass automated submissions. It is not stored with the report.
- Browsing data and cookies, described in the Cookie Policy.

Why we process them

Reports are used to enrich the historical archive and the maps of how surnames spread. Your email is used only to identify your report if you later ask for it to be removed: it is not used for marketing and is not passed on to third parties.

Legal basis

The consent you give by submitting the form (Art. 6(1)(a) of EU Regulation 2016/679). You can withdraw it at any time by writing to the address above.

How they are used and published

Individual reports are not published. On the maps they appear only in aggregated form, as the number of occurrences of a surname in a place and period.

Retention

Reports are kept for the duration of the project or until you ask for them to be deleted. The encrypted fingerprint of the IP address is deleted within 24 hours.

Data from public sources

The maps are also produced from publicly accessible documents and lists, both historical and recent: historical family archives, historical censuses, parish registers, cemetery records, conscription lists, registers and lists published by public bodies, and other public records.
From these sources we use only the surname, the place and the period. We do not keep or publish any other information about individuals, nor the source of each individual record.
The processing serves statistical and historical research purposes on the spread of surnames and is based on the controller's legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) of EU Regulation 2016/679), with the safeguards of Art. 89. Data are published only in aggregated form, as the number of occurrences of a surname in an area and period, with approximate positions: they do not allow individual people or families to be identified.
Given the very large number of people involved and the statistical purpose, it is not possible to inform each of them individually (Art. 14(5)(b) of the Regulation): this notice is published for that purpose.
You can object to this processing at any time by writing to info@mappadegliantenati.it and stating the surname and place: the data concerning you will be excluded from subsequent updates of the maps.

Your rights

You can request access to, correction or deletion of the data, restriction of or objection to processing, and withdraw your consent, by writing to info@mappadegliantenati.it. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian Data Protection Authority (www.garanteprivacy.it) or with the authority of your country.
